‘turn the tables’는 직역하면 ‘테이블을 돌리다’이지만, ‘형세를 역전시키다(reverse the situation)’라는 은유적 수사(metaphorical trope)로 쓰인다. 17세기 영국 문헌에 처음 등장한 표현으로, ‘Tables’라는 보드게임에서 유래했다(trace its origins back to ‘Tables’). 게임판을 사이에 두고 말을 움직여 승부를 가리는데(move pieces to determine the winner), 판을 180도 돌리면 위치가 거꾸로 돼 불리했던 쪽이 유리한 입장으로 뒤바뀌는(put the previously disadvantaged player at an advantage) 데서 비롯된 관용구다.
